It probably results in poor attention to spelling and grammatical detail, because texting is a form of slang: i.e. it is rapid and informal. The obvious danger is that students forget the correct rules about grammar and spelling when required to write 'properly'. However, there is always a fine line between being pedantic about language and allowing language to evolve. Texting language is, therefore, part of the evolutionary process of language, so it is probably more relevant to study its effect with interest, rather than make a futile attempt to prevent it.
