How does L3 (or multilingual) aquisition differ from L1 or L2 acquisition? Any suggestions for relevant literature?

I'm interested in multilingual aquisition and the relevance of metalinguistic awareness in comparing and contrasting between L1, L2 and L3 (or more). Particularly in a language teaching environment where exposure to the target language is limited. Is there any research that has looked into the effect of drawing comparisons between different languages in aiding language aquisition?
