Is use of the term "lineal feet" in the lumber industry ever correct, and if so, how would it be used.

Is use of the term "lineal feet" in the lumber industry ever correct, and if so, how would it be used. I am also curious to know if a specific community or group adopts a word or term as part of their vernacular, but uses it incorrectly, does it become a proper usage. If it does, is that use only acceptable within that community or is it then considered proper use no matter who applies it?
