How does one measure text complexity in student writing at the teriary level?

What would be the significant discourse features? My focus will be on grammatical and rhetorical features using tests in a longitudinal study of two groups (one introductory and one advanced class) at one tertiary level institution. I would love feedback on an the research design and or features to watch for.

The answer should include a measure of what is actually written and a mearure of the thought process that has gone into the style used to create the text.
