Not sure about this question from my linguistics class: The mental capacity that enables speakers to form grammatical sentences such as My mother is taking a long shower rather than “A taking long my shower is mother” (or thousands of other possible ill-formed strings of exactly the same words) is [a] grammatical competence / communicative competence.
