We're able to say, in standard US English, "Why don't you listen?" But the uncontracted form -- Why do not you listen? -- is troubling at the very least. I'm uncertain as to whether I would call it grammatically incorrect, but it's certainly not standard. Can someone help explain the rules that govern the usage of do not versus don't?
